Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy Promotes Healing and Microcirculation of Chronic Diabetic Foot Ulcers
A Pilot Study: Kwan, Rachel Lai-Chu MPhil; Wong, Wing-Cheung MBBS; Yip, Siu-Leung MMedSc; Chan, Ka-Lun MChS; Zheng, Yong-Ping PhD; Cheing, Gladys Lai-Ying PhD
The purpose of this study was to see if PEMF can help with healing and microcirculation. Microcirculation is the circulation of the blood in the smallest blood vessels, the micro-vessels of the micro-vasculature present within organ tissues. The micro-vessels include terminal arterioles, metarterioles, capillaries, and venules.
The study was deployed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial on a homogenous subset of chronic diabetic foot ulcers. The study took place at a university and a hospital with 7 subjects in the PEMF group and 6 in the controlled group (Placebo). Each subject recieved regular PEMF application, in this particular study it was applied for 60 minutes with a frequency: 12 Hz; intensity: 12 Gauss. The total sessions were 14 within 3 weeks.
The main assessment details included wounding healing rate, wound depth, and microcirculation were performed at the baseline, end of the treatment period, and 1-month follow-up.
The end of the experiment had very positive results for the prospects of treating various injuries or conditions: the end of the treatment period, there was an 18% decrease in wound size in the active PEMF group as compared with a 10% decrease in the control group. The PEMF group demonstrated significant cumulative increase in cutaneous capillary blood velocity (by 28%) and 14% increase in capillary diameter. In contrast, the control group showed a decrease in both capillary blood velocity and diameter.
